Flower beds are amazing spots on the Earth, aren’t they? They can be small, large, and spread out over many acres. They can specialize in one kind or color of a flower or have a riot of colors and scents competing for the attention of birds and bees, yet still demand our attention.

The sheer numbers of types of flowers are staggering. And those are just the flowers we see in our geographic area. We choose them for color, scent, shape, and size. And still, they surprise us with enthusiasm they bring to growing where we put them.

How much attention do your flower beds need?

Once your flower beds are established, they don’t need much. Water, certainly, like all growing things. Soil rich in nutrients – your Divine Lawns team probably gives it all the needed nutrients when treating the lawns and trees.

The flower beds need stability – sliding down a hillside in heavy rain would probably annoy most of the flowers and make a big mess. If the flowerbeds are on a slope, retaining walls with drainage may solve some of the problems that come with heavily sloped properties., Retaining walls can be very creative and complement the flowers.

Mulch and weeding are two remaining items every flower bed needs: a big, spreading bed of succulents or a small terraced bed of pansies made out of stacked and painted used tires. Your excellent landscape people at Divine probably do the weeding for you when they come to maintain your lawns and landscape, but because they apply mulch, there’s probably not much weeding.

The flower beds probably need our attention weekly, mostly to grab random weeds, inspect blossoms for problems, and perhaps reattach a rose here and there to the arbor or trellis constructed for it. But, again, unless you’ve asked your Divine team to leave some of the flower bed maintenance to you because you enjoy it, all of these tasks are done with minimal effort and time.

Changing flower faces

Of course, sometimes we need to change things up a bit. For example, flower bed changes require digging, relocating, and admiring a new bed or arrangement.

Many gardeners like putting out a specific range of white or pastel colors for spring, then planting showy flowers and colors for the rest of the summer. Or container gardening might be considered for the ease of moving things around.

Raised garden beds can be a big help for those with back problems, who enjoy getting their hands dirty, but can’t handle the bending anymore. Raised beds are also great for small space vegetable and herb gardens. Fresh veggies and herbs will make your meals memorable!

Fruit trees are usually welcome for their beauty and delicious product. The blossoms shine out during the spring with amazing scents and colors. Grab an apple or a peach from right overhead. But, of course, they need their growing areas with the same benefits of nutrients, water, and sunlight. So some gardeners restrict the size of the fruit trees by keeping them in containers and frequently pruning them. The fruit is, of course, the important thing. Yum!

Succulents and other types of exotic or tropical plants

Some of us have some ambitious projects that might need some help besides different types of bedding. For example, some tropical plants need a very humid atmosphere. In addition, some of the most beautiful tropical plants, such as orchids, are almost parasitic, getting nutrients from the trees where they live. Plants with those needs might need a greenhouse to thrive during the winter.

While you are making your weekly walk around your flower beds, pulling a weed here, patting down some mulch there, you probably imagine different kinds of flowers or ornamental plants in the beds. Let’s face it; it’s fun to think about doing things that might be a little different or even a little shocking. If you need a little bit of advice, your Divine team is there.

So go ahead and plant the big bearded iris you’ve been wanting! That purple color is glorious! Or the climbing roses of bright pink, with the amazing scent and smaller blossoms. A bunch of them in an old-fashioned mason jar might be the perfect touch for your kitchen!
