Planting flowers is a joyful part of the spring or whatever season you plant them. The feeling of reward we experience at the first splash of color is, dare we say, divine. But if you want to keep your gardens looking like a little piece of heaven, they require flowerbed maintenance.
You’ve Made Your Bed. Now Grow In It
When doing anything, the part we look forward to is rarely maintenance, but that doesn’t diminish its importance. So to make sure your garden continues to realize its potential, here are the essential maintenance tasks Divine recommends for your flower beds.
Gardening on the Edge
You may be the king or queen of the garden now, but there’s always grass looking to creep in. So what are you doing to keep your edge – that is, the edge of your garden?
Edging is vital for any flower bed maintenance. Your lawn and gardens are both better off when you maintain a distinct border between them.
Weeding
It’s a fact of life. Every time you water the flowers, you water the weeds. But that doesn’t mean it’s hopeless!
It’s certainly not impossible to keep these interlopers out of your garden of earthly delights. Keeping an eye on your garden during weekly maintenance will help you catch weeds early and remove them before they become more of a problem.
In addition, mulch helps to keep weeds to a minimum.
Your Flower Bed Maintenance Wingman: Mulch
We love mulch. Do you know how much we love mulch? So, so MULCH.
Mulch is the perfect marriage of style and substance. Your mulch can perfectly suit the look of your garden while also helping to keep it safe. And mulch is a vital aid in flowerbed maintenance.
Not only does mulch reduce weeds by covering the ground where they would grow, but it also makes it easier to spot weeds when they do pop up on occasion.
But mulch is more than a weed prevention tool! Mulch also keeps your garden insulated from the heat and cold, feeds it as it breaks down, and will be happy to be your getaway driver or godparent to your children. There’s nothing mulch can’t do.
But mulch doesn’t last forever, at least if it’s organic mulch. So as it breaks down and becomes garden food, you need to replenish it. So keep watching your mulch to see what its current state is.
Dead Heading
The flowers aren’t looking great, but you should see them live! Contrary to the first impression, dead-heading does not refer to following a jam band. Instead, dead-heading is the act of removing the blossoms on flowers that have died.
Some flowers require more dead-heading than others. For example, as the name suggests, day lilies’ blossoms only last a day before dying. Removing the dead blooms on flowers both improves their appearance and sends energy back to the still growing parts of the flowers.
Cleanup
Not to sound like classic Russian literature, but flowers die, and so does everything else. As plants die, the debris from them accumulates on the ground. This plant debris is not only unsightly but also bad for your flowers’ health.
Anything on top of your beds can block water and light from getting to your plants. It can also trap moisture causing fungus to grow and plants to become diseased.
Divine performs seasonal maintenance with a significant cleanup of your entire yard, but you should also consider weekly care for your flower beds.
Pests
Unfortunately, you’re not alone in your love for your gardens. Flowers (and veggies) attract all manner of animals and insects. While some of them can benefit your garden (we love you pollinators!), other visitors are detrimental.
We’re looking at you, grub worms, chinch bugs & armyworms.
You can do a lot to detract pests from eating your flowers or making your garden their home. One easy thing to do is to keep up to date on your mulch. Shouting out to our wingman again, mulch’s texture can keep slugs and other soft-bodied pests away, and various mulches also have pest repellant qualities.
There are also pest treatments to add to your garden to keep away unwanted visitors. Talk to Divine, and we’ll take good care of you.
