When you think “autumn,” what do you think? Probably colorful leaves, some fun holidays, and pumpkin spice everything. If you take another moment, you’ll probably say that it’s the season of death and waning, as plants die off or go dormant to prepare for the colder months, only to renew in the winter.

None of those descriptions of autumn are inaccurate, but they are oversimplified. After all, fall seasonal flowers are plentiful. And no matter the weather, there is always something thriving.

So while at Divine, we are all about getting your landscape ready for the colder winter months with leaf removals & general seasonal cleanup, we also want to help you make your yard a stunning autumnal vista to behold!

Today, Divine talks about fall flowers and landscape decoration.

Creating Your Fall LookSeasonal Fall Flowers in El Dorado, Kansas

Creating a flower bed in the fall is like designing your landscape for the rest of the year. You’ll need to consider the same factors. The following is a sampling of questions to ask.

  • What grows well in your yard?
  • What colors do you want to include?
  • How Will You incorporate different heights and textures?
  • How will it all look together?

Naturally, our clients don’t need to figure it all out alone! We ask you questions and then design, install, and maintain based on your preferences and our knowledge and skills.

What Grows in Fall?

Whatever your taste in landscaping, chances are you can find something beautiful to grow in your yard this autumn. Whether you just want a little color, some height, or even something you can eat, fall has more bounty than it generally gets credit for.

Grasses

In the fall, the grasses that make up your lawn are generally getting ready to go dormant. The property needs some mowing until the first frost. On the other hand, many ornamental types of grass will bring beauty to your landscape into the winter!

Much like your lawn doesn’t grow but does survive the winter, these seasonal grasses will add height and a pop of color to the rest of your yard.

Fall seasonal flowers like mums, asters, and black-eyed Susan can bloom throughout the fall. There’s plenty to choose from whether you’re looking for perennials or annuals. Though you might not have the same dazzling variety of colors available in the spring, there are more colors than you might expect to be available.

Depending on what time of the season you plant your fall perennials, you may be able to look forward to seeing them bloom again next year! It depends on whether they have enough time to establish themselves before the first frost.

Shrubs

Shrubs get short shrift. Most of the year, they are outshined by their taller cousins, the trees, and the divas of the garden, flowers. But in fall, shrubs sometimes shine! Even if you don’t add any fall seasonal flowers to your landscape, shrubs still add color when your trees have shed their leaves and the annuals in your flower beds have died.

Decorative Veggies

While not seasonal fall flowers in a traditional sense, many vegetables bloom in the fall. While you likely won’t find anyone without the last name Summers or Van Helsing decorating with garlic, peppers, and kale, both last throughout cold weather and add lovely color to a garden.

Some peppers and kales are edible, though most of the time, people decorate with other varieties. That said, you do you!

Fall Seasonal Flowers’ Considerations

Of course, just because something is tolerant of the cold doesn’t mean it doesn’t have any needs. So when planting and maintaining your fall seasonal flowers and other plants, you must ensure their needs are met and that they all work well together.

Generally speaking, most plants need less water in the fall. Like anything, there are caveats, of course, but with the sun beating down less harshly, flowers can generally hold onto their water a little longer.

Conversely, plants still need some sun! Not needing warmth doesn’t mean not needing light. So we ensure that plants that need full sunlight are planted in full sunlight, shade plants get shade, and so on.

Conclusion

Although fall contains Halloween and the Day of the Dead, there’s no reason your garden needs to be a nightmare before Christmas! There are dozens of ways to glam up your landscape all year. Many take minimal maintenance and will return season after season.
