Today, Divine Landscaping is spotlighting one of the towns we serve and sharing what we love about the County Seat of Butler County and what makes it so special.
Climate
As landscapers, it won’t surprise you that weather is the first subject we can consider. El Dorado is a subtropical climate that experiences all four seasons, like the surrounding areas of Kansas.
Our summers are hot and very humid, while our winters are relatively mild but still feature snow. As such, Divine offers year-round landscaping services that change with the weather.
This time of year, we’re doing a lot of yard and bed cleanup along with preparing to apply preemergent weed control to your flower beds. We’re also providing snow and ice management.
Most of the rest of the year is spent mowing and growing the many plants that are suitable for your Kansas landscaping.
History
Planned out in 1868 and founded in 1870, like so many midwest and western cities, El Dorado’s growth depended on the railroad arriving here seven years later in 1877.
The El Dorado oil field was in the early 1900s, the was the first ever to be located using scientific tools and was credited as the oil field that won the war (World War I). The next World War also had some history here as we had large POW internment camps full of Italian and German prisoners who often volunteered to help on local farms to get out of the camps and enjoy better food.
Economy
Though oil is still a significant piece of the ED economy, we have also diversified into some other areas.
Oil
For most of Kansas’ history, oil has been a significant piece of the economy, with “the oil field that won the war.” Today, workers still refine oil at the El Dorado refinery. Originally owned and operated by Skelly Oil, it has changed hands many times over the years and is currently owned by HollyFrontier, which specializes in refining petroleum and other chemical products.
Education & More
In the modern day, another major economic engine of the town is Butler Community College, home to the Grizzlies and Lady Grizzlies. As the second largest community college in Kansas, it trains many future workers in their careers. They are accredited by the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs, the Higher Learning Commission, the National League of Nursing, and the Kansas State Board of Nursing.
Butler Community College is also a popular spot to catch a game.
A thriving town like El Dorado is full of restaurants, breweries, museums, parks, and cultural sites. The entrepreneurial spirit is strong here, as you’ll see in our Things to Do Section.
Things to Do
El Dorado has many opportunities unique to the area, from restaurants with incredible views to museums that dive deep into the area’s history.
Museums & History
There are museums and historical sites dedicated to each era of ED history. For example, the Butler County History Center & Kansas Oil Museum teaches about the oil boom and its effect on the Kansas economy. For a more global view, check out the WWII History Center.
We also have museums for arts and sports fans, with the Coutts Memorial Museum of Art, which is full of work by regional painters, and the Baseball Hall of Fame, which showcases some of our famed athletes.
Parks & Natural Beauty
The parks and recreation in Butler County are second to none. Outdoor enthusiasts love El Dorado Lake and State Park’s trails, campsites, cabins, and wildlife habitat. We also have many county-run parks where kids can enjoy a chance to explore outside or play on a sports field.
Food
To experience the high life, check out Stearman Field, located at Stearman Airport, where you can get soaring views of aircraft as they land and take off. The food trucks in our corner of Butler are also varied with something to fit every palette from desert to Hibachi to barbeque.
Did you know we have a signature dish? It’s the veal sandwich, and you can find it at numerous local eateries.
Conclusion
El Dorado is a lovely town with its own culture but an excellent understanding of its relationship to the rest of the world. Divine loves living and working here!
