Flower Power
Nothing says Spring like newly blooming flowers. Even the most famous symbols of Spring - the birds and the bees, spend a lot of time around flowers. But while nature does a fantastic job of producing beautiful every year, your landscape might need a little help in creating the flower beds of your choosing. But you don't need to do your flowerbed maintenance and design alone when you have Divine's intervention. So today, we'll talk about everything you need to know to have gorgeous flowerbeds in your Kansas yard.
Annuals, Perennials, and Grass, Oh My!
If you have favorite flowers and other ornamental plants, that may be an excellent place to start. Then, you can build your gardens around your favorite. Consider if you want the same plants every year or if you enjoy changing them. Perennials return season after season, whereas annuals do not. You can always anchor your gardens with returning perennials but add diversity with new annuals each year.Flower Bed Design
It starts with a plan! Without a good design, installing or maintaining your flowers won't matter because you won't have the foundation to build upon them. Good landscape design considers color, height, and texture while creating contrasts. We'll work with you to create a contrasting yet complementary flower bed that looks beautiful as a whole while also allowing each individual element to shine.
Height
Landscape design aesthetics need different heights, to say interesting. So you have your tall trees, short grasses, and shrubs in between. Flowerbed design does the same on a smaller scale. Ideally, you will have flowers of different heights and maybe also some shrubs and ornamental grasses within your flower beds.Color
Like height, you need contrasting colors within your flower beds to keep them interesting. How much contrast depends on the aesthetic and style you want to create. For some gardens, it may be nice to have different shades of the same color or complementary colors near each other. Sometimes a complete color is a significant element to pop out among more neutral colors. Another option is to keep your flowers reasonably similar in color but contrast them with a mulch that makes them stand out.Texture
Texture is one of the most misunderstood elements in landscape design. Rather than describing the literal feel of a plant, it's more about its shape and perceived texture. For example, round-petaled plants have different shapes than pointier ones. Similarly, spiky ornamental grasses and shrubs contrast nicely with flowers' softer feel.Flower Bed Installation and Considerations
Once we've designed your flower bed, it's time to install it! When installing, we'll do everything we can to ensure your flowers have everything they need to thrive. To begin, we'll prepare the ground. If you already have a garden, this may primarily involve adding fertilizer and soaking the soil. If we build a brand new garden, we'll begin by breaking up the ground in addition to amending it. Once the ground is ready, we'll select the best specimens of the flowers you want to grow and add them to your flower beds. Then we'll lay down mulch all around it and water it again. Mulch serves a few functions for your flowers. We've already described how it can create a visual contrast. But mulch also creates a weed barrier and helps your flower beds to retain moisture.
