Lawn Maintenance Fundamentals
As a wise man once said, " 'Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.' So we'd do well to celebrate some of the simpler things in life, like a well-cut lawn. The perfect lawn may not be the pinnacle of man's achievement, but it gives our homes a sense of order and shows the neighbors we care. So lawn maintenance is one of the priorities for Spring landscaping and into the summer. But though we describe the lawn as a simple thing, that doesn't mean there's nothing to doing an excellent job with it. Proper lawn service takes time, sound equipment, attention to detail, and more than mowing. Here's how Divine improves your El Dorado lawn.
Lawn Mowing
It all starts with mowing, at least in the thought process. For actual sequencing, it may begin with edging, but we'll get to that later. For many, mowing is all they do for the lawn. If all you want is to keep the ticks from infesting or the neighbors from reporting you to the HOA, then mowing may be all you need. It won't give you an exceptional lawn, but it will manage it. But even mowing is more complex than most people outside of landscaping realize. You should understand three things before you can do an excellent job with your lawn mower.
The Equipment
The quality of your equipment matters when lawn mowing. You don't need the biggest, baddest, most expensive tractor on the market (though a good one helps), but you do need one that works well, and you need to keep it in good condition. As professional landscapers, Divine understands the importance of caring for our equipment, both from the perspective of longevity and getting the best cut. But, most relevant to you, we're careful to keep our mower blades sharp. A dull blade will ruin your grass. It damages the blades like trying to chop lettuce with a spoon. The effect is yellow or dead grass. Did you know that if you only have a small lawn, you should sharpen your blade at least once per season? The Grass
Not all lawns are the same. Not only are many made up of weeds and grass, but the grass itself differs from lawn to lawn. There are over one thousand grass species in the U.S. alone! Knowing the species of grass contained in your lawn will help you to determine the grasses' nutritional needs and optimal cutting height. The Season
Finally, grass needs to change with the seasons. The first cut of the Spring will be different than the last cut of the fall. And everything in between varies based on temperatures, precipitation, and other weather conditions.Edging
While we address edging second, beginning your lawn maintenance routines by establishing a clear edge is one of the most effective ways to ensure you have a neat lawn. We use an edger to dig a short trench around the border of the lawn. This edge serves several purposes. Firstly, the edge makes your lawn stand out. That's why actors use eyeliner on stage. The definition makes what it surrounds clearer. Next, edging makes the rest of your lawn maintenance easier. With the established edge, you can spend less time on the time-consuming details. Finally, perhaps most essentially, the edge keeps your grass in place. Grassroots have a more challenging time crossing that border, so it stays out of your gardens and hardscaping.
